On Friday evening, I had the pleasure of going to a gig by Mix Master Mike—long-term house DJ of the Beastie Boys—supported by Switzerland’s The Famous Goldfinger Brothers. Unfortunately, Mike didn’t bring the Beastie crew, so it was “just” him on the turntables and nobody emceeing along. But that was the point and he did a nice job keeping the crowd alive and awake at this ungodly hour (12:15 a.m. till about 2:30 a.m.).

He was in a good mood, scratching away at his digital vinyls, and spurring people on to jump around and flail their arms, as is the custom. Also, like Jazzy Jeff a week before him and so many other DJs nowadays, he used a PowerBook and Serato’s Scratch LIVE; instead of etching away at real records and swapping them every few minutes. It seems the Old Skool ain’t so old anymore. He did have a few too many elements of techno in his set, as far as I’m concerned; at least compared to Jazzy, who was very much on the hip-hop side of things during his two hours of external-USB–hard–drive scratching last week.

Lucky me, I got to take my camera inside and took a few shots of the happening. Here’s a tiny selection (click for larger size; full-size images available upon request)…

So much for the show. And just because it’s so great, here is the full-length music video of “Three MC’s And One DJ” by the Beastie Boys.
