Penguin Classics

I am a little late but Penguin Classics is 60 this year. They are celebrating by selling the best of the best in five-volume topic bundles. There is the Best Villains, the Best Decadence, the Best Crazies, the Best Laughs, or the Best Debauchery ever written, among other categories. It is really interesting to see what they chose and what they left out; and also into which topics they put certain books, e.g. Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales is part of The-Best-Sex-Ever-Written bundle.

Have a look at the list. I would love to know where you agree and where you disagree (especially the latter). These kinds of rankings are very debatable but that makes it so rewarding to look through them. One actually starts to think about the topic, be it books, films, or songs. Personally, I do not own a single Penguin Classic volume but I like the idea of canon nonetheless.
